How To Deliver Technical Training Successfully
" How To Make The Dullest, Most Complex Material Interesting, Engaging - And Memorable! "
Do you have to deliver training based on " dry " or complex information, such as legislation, regulations, processes or other technical material?
Are you concerned that the people you train just aren't " getting it ", or that they're not retaining or implementing what they've learned?
Do you suspect that your training could be more engaging, more memorable - more fun?
Do you ( and your learners ) look forward to your training courses, feel excited about them and enjoy them...
...or do you ( and your learners ) heave a deep sigh when you think about the training coming up and wonder how you can make the day more bearable?
Let's face it, technical training can be a real challenge.
I should know - I used to train people in Tax legislation ( believe me, if you can make Tax interesting and easy to understand, you can do it with anything! )
But now there's good news! This 1 day workshop is specifically for trainers who deliver technical material - and it will give you new ideas, tips and techniques to transform your training.
The BIG problems for technical trainers
By technical training, I mean anything that involves helping people to learn information or technical processes rather than what's often called " soft skills training ".
The BIG challenges for you are:
- explaining processes or concepts clearly
- choosing the right content for specific sessions or courses
- delivering information in a variety of ways
- matching the level of knowledge and learning styles of learners
- bringing potentially dull material to life and keeping people's attention
- helping people to remember complex or detailed information
- making sure what's learned is transferred back to the workplace
If you're absolutely confident that you can do all of those things really well, please save your time and don't read any further! Go and do something else and enjoy the rest of your day.
But if, somewhere inside, you have a nagging feeling that you could do even better - keep reading.
Because, at this workshop you'll learn exactly how to:
- use discussion and activities to make learning interactive and engaging
- help people to see the relevance of what they've learned and transfer it back to the " real world "
- deliver training which appeals to different learning styles so everyone learns effectively
- liven up dry or complex information so that it becomes interesting and absorbing
- help participants learn more quickly and easily and remember what they've learned long after the training
The workshop will be lively, interactive - and fun! It will involve lots of activities and plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions.
It's based on my own experience of over 18 years in training and development, most of which involved training professional consultants, accountants and business advisors in highly technical and complex material - so I know what works!
Are You An Internal Trainer With A " Proper Job" ?
Perhaps you're a line manager or technical specialist trying to develop your training skills by trial and error while combining training with your other work?
I know what it's like to have to deliver technical training as well as doing your " proper job ", I did it for years when I was a Tax Consultant and manager. I designed and delivered Tax courses whille still doing my client work and managing a team, preparing materials in my own time and watching the other trainers around me, trying to pick up tips from them.
It's hard. You don't have time to do much research into effective training techniques or to develop new skills. You learn as you go along, watching other people, finding out what works and what doesn't. All the while, you're expected to deliver results because it's essential that the people you're training learn effectively so they can do their jobs properly.
If you're in this position, trying to deliver effective training while balancing this with your other work, this workshop will save you time and heartache!
You'll take away a wealth of ideas and techniques which you can draw on, which it would take you many years to learn " on the job". You'll also be aware of some common mistakes and pitfalls and be able to avoid them.
This workshop will give you lots of practical ideas you can put into practice immediately to spice up your training! You'll see better results, you'll get better feedback from your participants.
Some typical questions people have
" The material I have to use is so dry, it's a boring subject. I don't know how to bring it to life. "
You'll learn how to take any content and deliver it in a way which engages and interests your learners. After all, anyone can deliver dry material in a boring way, you want to be the one who knows how to spice it up, to make it gripping and real.
You need to know how to get information across in ways which appeal to different senses and which get people active and keep their interest. You also need to know how to use visual aids successfully to stimulate learning ( and that doesn't mean PowerPoint slides with lots of words on ). This workshop will show you how to do that.
" I'm sure they forget most of what they've learned as soon as they walk out of the door. What else can I do to make it stick? "
Unfortunately, a lot of the information people receive on training courses is left behind when they leave the room. Or, as my mother used to say, " In one ear and out the other. " That's often because they were never very involved or interested in the first place. Using the methods you'll learn at this workshop, you can be confident that your learners will retain more and use more of what they've learned.
" I was asked to do some training because I know a lot about the subject, but I haven't had any training myself in how to do it. "
It's very common that people who are technical experts are asked to train others. That's how I got involved in training myself years ago. But, just because you know a subject, that doesn't mean you know how to teach it to other people. This workshop will give you a crash course in how to train effectively, using interactive methods and based on the most up - to - date understanding of how people learn.
What the workshop will cover
There are 3 main sections to the workshop.
How to structure your training
You need to choose exactly the right content for your group and structure it to have the maximum impact.
You'll learn:
- what you must know before you even begin designing training
- how to choose just the right content for your group ( and how to avoid the No 1 problem with most technical training )
- how to engage people from the beginning and then keep them with you until the end
- how to make sure your key points stand out
- how to close with impact
How to deliver technical information
If you train people in how to use systems or processes, or if you deal with complex technical information, you need to know how to put it across clearly and simply.
You'll learn:
- how to give instructions and explanations so that people can understand easily
- how to help people learn technical information or processes
- how to make sure people understand and remember ( and the worst way to check understanding )
- how to increase the transfer of learning from the training room to the workplace
How to engage and involve your learners
This part of the workshop will show you how to bring your subject to life and make your training engaging and interactive.
You'll learn:
- how to cater for different learning styles
- when and how to use visual aids to suport learning
- choices, choices - how to decide which medium to use
- the right way to use PowerPoint
- what you should NEVER do with PowerPoint ( but many trainers do )
- the right way to use flipcharts ( I may even show you how to draw cartoons! )
- the advantages ( and hidden dangers ) of small group activities
