Over 20 years of training experience
I have spent most of my adult life involved in teaching, training and coaching, helping thousands of people to improve their personal and professional skills. I’ve been involved in all aspects of learning and development, from training needs analysis, through design and delivery to evaluation.
Like many people, I first started training in addition to my ” proper job “, preparing for courses in my own time and learning training skills as I went along. I know how difficult it can be to combine both jobs and how long it can take to develop your skills when you’re training part – time.
I have designed and delivered both “soft skills” courses and highly technical courses, and I’ve run Train the Trainer courses for over 18 years (although the names have changed with the fashions – T4T, Training for Trainers, Train the Trainer, Facilitator Development…)
I spent 13 years at Deloitte, one of the world’s largest professional services firms. At the same time as being a busy Tax Consultant, I designed and delivered many of their core technical programmes. So I’ve plenty of experience of turning potentially dull, complex information into interesting and engaging training material.
I eventually moved full – time into training and then became more involved in management skills training, becoming head of the Skills Development team for the UK Tax Practice. I ran courses for Deloitte all over Europe before leaving to set up my own training and coaching business in 2003.
In a previous life, I was a Primary Teacher and taught English as a Second Language to 4 and 5 year olds. ( And, although there are significant differences between teaching young children and training adults, it’s surprising how similar they can be ).
I’ve written numerous articles, booklets and ebooks. I’ve also appeared on the radio several times.
Effective, practical training with enthusiasm, humour and rapport
I’m known for my sense of humour and a practical, down to earth approach. I blend theory and practice to give people a real understanding of what works and why.
My training courses are engaging, inspiring and effective.
I’m a keen guitarist. I’ve played in public since I was 17 ( yes, this is me ).
I also like drawing cartoons, as you’ll see on any of my courses ( in fact, I’ll probably show you how to draw cartoons if you come on the Transform Your Training course ).
I support Middlesbrough FC, so I know how a lack of basic skills can hold people back!
I’m married and I live in Solihull in the West Midlands.
How Can I Help You?
I can work with your organisation in several ways to help you make sure your training programmes are well – designed, well – delivered and effective. I can do this by running in – house courses such as:
- a comprehensive Transform Your Training programme or
- a 1 day Lively Learning workshop
Alternatively, I can:
- work with your training team to review your training materials and help to redesign them or find new ways to make them more lively and engaging, or
- help you start from scratch by doing some training needs analysis or evaluation of your current training to see where it might need some changes
I’m happy to come and talk to your training team or HR department to discuss ways in which we might work together.
